Berlin 30.03.2022. Start Up Energy Transition (SET) yesterday unveiled their SET100 List for 2022, the annual compilation of the most promising global innovators in the energy transition who are transforming the industry and shaping the future of energy. This year’s SET100 list recognises 100 start-ups from 31 countries, including Canada, Colombia, Estonia, the Netherlands, Nigeria, the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.

The SET100 list is a selection of the 100 best innovations from the SET Award application phase, which features 5 different categories, including: Clean Energy Generation, Demand-side Innovation, Energy Distribution & Storage, Smart Mobility & Transportation, Quality Energy Access & SDG-7.

Andreas Kuhlmann, CEO of the German Energy-Agency (dena) said: “Going into the 6th edition of the Start Up Energy Transition (SET) Award, we continue to see our network of energy sector stakeholders grow and reach new heights. Despite the challenges that we face today, the global energy start-up ecosystem has continued to prove resilient and produce solutions. We have seen the immense power that innovation and thinking outside-the-box has had, namely during the current times of environmental, diplomatic and economic uncertainty. In these moments, I believe that innovation presents an incredible opportunity to build a stronger net zero future.

We are proud to have created a global platform which enables deep connections between start-ups, investors, corporates, and the public sector. We once again received a significant number of impressive start-up applications, which deserve global attention and support to have the maximum impact on reversing climate change.’’

Along with the SET100 list the finalists of the Start Up Energy Transition Award 2022 have been announced yesterday evening at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue, in Berlin. To compile the list, SET collaborated with an international jury of experts, including Dr. Angela Wilkinson, Secretary General and CEO, World Energy Council, Danny Kennedy, Managing Director, California Clean Energy Fund, Dr. Antje Danielson, Director of Education, MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), David Addison, Climate, Innovation, Purpose & Sustainability, Virgin Group and Javiera Aldunate, Representative of the MIT Sloan Latin America Office (MSLAO), MIT, and more.

Together, they carefully selected the top 15 start-ups from over 360 applications from 69 countries. The finalists were announced by Andreas Kuhlmann, CEO of the German Energy-Agency (dena), and Dr. Linda Davis, Founder and CEO of Giraffe Bioenergy.

The SET Award and the SET 100 list are part of the Start Up Energy Transition initiative, which is powered by the German Energy Agency (dena) and the World Energy Council. In addition to the annual competition, the initiative offers start-ups from all over the world a platform to present themselves: the Global Innovation Platform. The network aims to bridge the gap between innovative business models and political will in order for start-ups in the energy sector to scale-up impact, accelerate the global energy transition and in the end reverse climate change.
