Turkey’s energy consumption is expected to further increase. The country has few of its own developed fossil fuel resources and relies heavily on energy imports. Turkey has great potential for renewable energy. Turkey thus has great interest in expanding and integrating renewable energy sources and measures for increasing energy efficiency.
Targets
The aim of the German-Turkish Energy Partnership is to strengthen the cooperation between Germany and Turkey on energy. This cooperation consists of exchanging experiences and initiating specific projects that support Turkey on its way to climate neutrality. The promotion of networking between German and Turkish stakeholders from industry, science and civil society is also an important goal.
Focus topics
The topics of the German-Turkish Energy partnership are varied. Focuses include the expansion of renewables and their integration into the electricity system. Storage technologies and green hydrogen are also becoming increasingly important. Another focus is on increasing energy efficiency as well as appropriate models for financing. Regulation of the electricity and gas markets is also part of the joint work.
Approach
Since the Tukish-German Energy Forum was founded in 2012, dena has been working for the BMWK with numerous players from politics and industry in both countries.
The priorities of the energy partnership are set annually by the responsible ministries. In addition to intensive exchange in working groups, which are subdivided according to five different topics, the exchange is deepened through workshops, studies, seminars and expert trips. The aim is to develop and implement pilot projects.
Effects
The studies, pilot projects and events on energy policy strengthen the German-Turkish cooperation and exchange of experience on a political and economic level. Both countries profit from this on their path to a climate-neural, secure, affordable and sustainable energy system.
