Starting point
Description: German-Israeli Energy Partnership
Client: Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK)
Country: Israel
Lead executing agency/partner ministries: Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure of the State of Israel
Founding year: 2022
Israel is a highly developed country with an increasing demand of energy. In the past decade, Israel has began to produce its own offshore-natural gas reserves. These largely meet Israel's energy needs, promote its energy independence and provide export opportunities. However, in the year 2021, Israel set itself new climate policy goals: by 2050, the country aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 85 percent compared to 2015 levels. To achieve this, the expansion of renewable energy is to be driven forward. By 2030, almost a third of the generated electricity should be green. At the same time, the Israeli technology industry with its innovative startup scene can be an integral contribution to the global energy transition.
Targets
The goal of the German-Israeli Energy Partnership is to jointly advance the further development of technology for the provision of reliable, sustainable and affordable energy. The focus is on the expansion of renewable energy, the usage of new energy technology and the (digital) protection of critical energy infrastructure.
Focus topics
The expansion of renewable energy and the topic of energy efficiency are important thematic areas of the energy partnership. With Israel, Germany wins a strong technology partner. Therefore, the focus is particularly on the areas of cybersovereignty and digitization of the energy sector. The production and usage of hydrogen is a potential focus of joint research and development projects in addition to the topic of renewable energy. Both countries are also interested in Israel's cross-border cooperation to achieve renewable energy goals and combat the negative effects of climate change.
Approach
The energy partnership between Israel and Germany was established on 23 March 2022. The partner ministries, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the Ministry of Energy of the State of Israel, are developing solutions to the challenges of energy transformation in Germany and Israel on the basis of a joint work programme within the framework of agreed exchange formats.
Effects
The German-Israeli Energy Partnership will promote cooperation between the two countries. The partnership also has great potential to promote the development of technological responses to challenges posed by the global energy transition, thus creating added value not only bilaterally but also internationally.
