One of the declared objectives of the energy transition is the integration of renewable sources into the electricity supply. However, before an electricity supplier can e.g. invest in wind energy, he will want to be sure that this will also pay off for him financially, and that there is long-term planning security. In this context, the following question arises: Which changes in the electricity grid are necessary within what period of time in order to be able to adequately implement the use of renewable energy sources, which by nature fluctuate? Even back when the possibility of grid expansion was not a public topic, dena was already intensively dedicated to it.
In order to obtain realistic and sound findings, dena commissioned recognised experts with the creation of two studies. In 2005, Grid Study I was presented, which contained strategies for achieving a share of 20 percent of renewable energy sources in the generation of electricity in Germany between 2015 and 2020. Grid Study II then followed in 2010, which predicts an expansion to 39 % by the year 2015. In particular, the grid studies are concerned with the successive integration of wind power output on land and sea. For an audit of the interim and final results, dena commissioned an external expert.
Grid Studies I and II convincingly present the measures which will allow the German electricity grid to meet the challenges of the future: through targeted grid expansion and at the same time optimising the existing energy infrastructure. These findings provide energy suppliers with additional planning security: This means that investment decisions are now based on reliable figures instead of speculation. Today, the topic of grid expansion is firmly anchored in the minds of the involved parties. The comprehensive change which the German electricity market is about to undergo can now also take place in an orderly fashion thanks to the study.
