Vietnam – Building Transition

Vietnam’s economic boom and increasing urbanisation have led to a sharp rise in demand for energy and building materials.

For this reason, measures to increase the country’s energy and resource efficiency are urgently needed. dena will support the country in this endeavour with the ‘Vietnam – Building Transition’ project, making a practical contribution to implementing the global energy transition and the Paris Agreement.

The challenge

Vietnam committed to a change of policy towards sustainable growth in 2017 in line with the 2030 Agenda. With initiatives such as the Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8), the government is primarily trying to increase the country’s energy and resource efficiency. The building sector is one of the sectors with the highest energy consumption, which means that the implementation of energy-efficient and sustainable solutions plays a central role in this area. However, these have so far only been implemented to a very limited extent, as there is still a lack of building standards for energy efficiency and trained specialists in Vietnam.

What we are doing:

There is a particularly high demand for increasing energy and resource efficiency in the building sector in the dynamically growing metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City and the neighbouring province of Binh Duong. For this reason, dena would like to support this region specifically in the concrete implementation of energy-efficient and sustainable measures. This includes carrying out studies of potential, developing a building standard concept, supporting a pilot project and building up expertise. dena is supporting the entire project process, together with the local partner, the Vietnamese-German University. This allows regional and international experience to be brought in and combined.

The overall outcome

As part of the project, relevant stakeholders in the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan region will be empowered to plan and implement energy efficiency and climate protection measures in the building sector. The established expertise should have a multiplier effect and lead to a general increase in energy and resource efficiency in Vietnam. This supports the global energy transition and contributes to the fight against climate change around the world. The successful realisation of the project will also strengthen German-Vietnamese cooperation.
