Module: Energy production and distribution

What are realistic transformation paths for the energy system? Which regional and supra-regional infrastructure requirements can be expected for electricity, gas, and heating? Which adjustments would be necessary in the case of increasing electrification? What is the function of the European internal market?

The Study Module “Energy production and distribution” consolidates the results of the other modules with their energy needs and specific requirements. In particular, it takes into account the reciprocal effects between the sectors and determines how infrastructures for energy distribution should be developed in the electricity, gas, heating, and liquid fuels sectors. Key questions of the Module include:

  • What are realistic transformation paths for the energy system when taking into account realistic efficiency goals in the sectors?
  • Which regional and supra-regional infrastructure requirements can be expected for electricity, gas, and heating?
  • Which adjustments would be necessary in the case of increasing electrification?
  • What is the function of the European internal market in the integrated energy transition?

The goal of the module “Energy production and distribution” is to obtain findings to ensure a secure energy supply up to 2050. This includes, for example, identifying the share of imports for covering energy needs, as well as relevant key technologies and energy sources for an integrated energy transition. During this process, both the costs as well as the societal acceptance are taken into account.
